Why edit a text?
In brief: to verify and improve the exactitude, completeness and comprehensibility of the translation. The translator tends to be more attached to the words and sentences of the original text, whereas the editor is able to read the text with a more general outlook.
Editing has always been part of our service.
The translator’s text is the initial version for our in-house editors who then check the translation word for word by comparing it to the source material. Even the best translator sometimes omits things or misunderstands the sentences of the original text.
The work of our editor lies in logical verification of the text. Does the translated sentence correspond to the original text and fit into the context? Will the particular term be understood by the audience? Do the terms used in the text connect into a system? Are they in accord with the field’s terminology? These are the questions the editor asks which are very different from those a translator asks. The editor passes through the text quicker than the translator: that helps him/her to notice stylistic and lexical disharmony. Editing by a specialist is effective because the editor has the habit and experience from daily work of spotting errors and harmonizing works, recognizing what must be checked in a text and which sources to use.
Editing is important because then another person reviews the text carefully. The translator-editor chain assures unified quality of the work. Double-check system also allows combining an optimum chain of translators where more specific professional knowledge is linked up to a broader base of experience. Thus the engineer’s intuition is connected to the linguist’s feel for nuance; legal and economic skills are enriched by the knowledge of various languages. A person confined to one speciality may not notice that the term he/she uses fails to match the terminology of other domains. But an editor working with numerous texts of different fields would detect such a discord.
